SW goes monthly.

Already got a subscription? Here’s the reply;

“Most people would have either a current 8 or 9 issue subscription. Instead of now lasting a full year, it will fall short by a couple of months. They’ll still get their 8 or 9 issues that they paid for of course, and we’ll send out a renewal notice when the subscription is getting close to expiring.

It should be noted however, that subscribers can renew at any time between now and when their subscription is due to expire, particularly if they take a fancy to any of the monthly subscription promotions that we advertise in the magazine and on the website. The renewal will automatically kick in when the old sub finishes.

SURFING AUSTRALIA TO BUILD WORLD’S FIRST DEDICATED SURF TRAINING FACILTY

2010

SURFING AUSTRALIA TO BUILD WORLD’S FIRST DEDICATED SURF TRAINING FACILTY
AUSTRALIA is set to maintain its tag as the world’s premier surfing nation, with the federal government pledging $2 million to Surfing Australia for a dedicated training facility at a media conference at Casuarina, NSW today.
As part of its commitment to the sport, Surfing Australia will build the world’s first purpose-built high performance training facility at Casuarina, Northern NSW to support our elite athlete development pathway.
Minister for Sport The Hon Kate Ellis, Member for Richmond The Hon Justine Elliot along with a host of past and present Australian world surfing champions including 7 x ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (Sydney, NSW), 1978 ASP Men’s World Champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew (Coolangatta, Qld) and 2009 ASP Men’s World no.2 Joel Parkinson (Coolangatta, Qld) were present for the day’s announcement.
Surfing Australia Chief Executive Officer Andrew Stark said the surf training facility would be internationally recognised as the world’s best practice for high performance surfing development.
“This is a monumental day for Surfing Australia and will ensure our continued domination of international surfing into the future. We are extremely appreciative of this support from the Federal Government,” he said.
“We now have an opportunity to transform and evolve surfing in Australia to ensure that we stay ahead of the rest of the world as the number one surfing nation. For some time now, Australian surfers have been at risk of falling behind our international rivals who are increasingly investing in bridging the gap. Through this new purpose built High Performance Centre we will be engaging the very best in sports science and cutting edge athlete performance technology to ensure Australian surfers have the absolute world’s best training environment. We will be working with the Australian Institute of Sport to ensure our facilities and training techniques are cutting edge and that they result in continued world champion results.”
Surfing Australia Chairman Norm Innis agrees that the facility will lead the way in surfing development.
“The new High Performance Centre for Surfing at Casuarina will not only be the centre of excellence for the sport in Australia, but it will be the leading facility of its kind around the globe,” he said.
“As such, it should cement Australia’s “World No. 1” position for surfing performance, and coaching and officiating development, for many years to come.”
Surfing in Australia has become an important part of the Australian culture and today more than ever the sport of surfing is truly synonymous with the Australian sporting landscape.
“Surfing is a healthy, whole of life national sport and a part of the Australian ethos and culture,” added Stark. “It is vitally important we continue to produce Australian world champions for our sports development and success into the future. The strength of our sport development pathway and massive participation numbers of 2.5 million per year are affected by international success. This is evident in many Australian sports and this new facility will ensure we continue our international success into the future.”
“Along with a new national training facility, we will be working closely with the Australian Sports Commission to build a stronger national high performance system and culture that will see our elite surfers supported and serviced at all levels of the event and athlete pathway. This is truly an exciting time for our sport and will ensure many podium results into the future for Australian surfers.”
Surfing Australia proposes to construct a new multilevel building on a dedicated freehold title, which was gifted to Australia’s peak body for the sport of surfing by Consolidated Properties.
Once complete, the training facility will boast world-class education facilities, administration offices as well as treatment and conditioning rooms. This would be combined with skilled coaches and cutting-edge sports science sports medicine services.
Elite surfers and coaches would not only have state of the art facilities at their fingertips but also have access to specialist programs and the facility’s extensive resources.
The facility will be based on the wave rich Northern NSW coastline at Casuarina Beach. This strategic location is 15 minutes south of the world class Gold Coast point breaks, but enough distance away to allow training and coaching in idyllic conditions with uncrowded waves.
About Surfing Australia:
Surfing Australia is a not for profit incorporated National Sporting Organisation that was formed in 1963 to establish, guide and promote the development of surfing in Australia.
Surfing Australia is the representative body on the International Surfing Association (ISA) of which there are 56 member countries and is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission, the Australian Olympic Committee and is a member of the Water Safety Council of Australia.
Surfing underpins an important part of the Australian coastal fabric. It forms part of a lifestyle in which millions participate with a mystique in which millions more have a documented interest.

Coastalwatch Surfboards Abroad project

Local surfers in Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea receive new Firewire Surfboards through the Coastalwatch Surfboards Abroad project

Surfing Australia, Coolangatta, Gold Coast: Local surfers living in the remote but surf rich regions of Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea are ecstatic after receiving a bunch of brand new Firewire surfboards!

It’s all part of the Coastalwatch Surfboards Abroad project and is partnered by Firewire Surfboards, Surfing World, Surfing Australia and ASP Australasia to make a difference in local communities, six brand new Firewire’s were delivered to the surfing associations in each region.

It began in Sri Lanka when ASP Australasia ran the WQS event there a last month and was followed up at a Surfing Australia judging seminar in Papua New Guinea in mid July.

With great waves surrounding both local communities, the locals are obviously taking to the surf, often on older surfboards left behind by travellers, but their surfing abilities are developing exceptionally fast and injecting new equipment into these areas exclusively for the locals to share is certain to add to their surfing stoke and development!

Kim Sundell , Managing Director of Coastalwatch commented on the project , “We were really happy to partner with Firewire and this is a real grass roots example of that positive obligation we all have to help.”

In Papua New Guinea Mr Andrew Abel President of the Surfing Association of PNG gratefully accepted the donated Coastalwatch surfboards from Glen Elliott representing Surfing Australia.

Mr Abel made mention that “SAPNG are committed to an ongoing relationship with Surfing Australia and their partners like Coastalwatch to expand surfing throughout all of PNG.”

While in Sri Lanka ASP Australasia Tour manager donated two new boards to the Arugam Bay Boardriders.

“There are some exceptionally talented surfers in Sri Lanka and many other parts of the world who struggle to access quality surfing equipment, something many of us can take for granted.

“These boards are only a small step but hopefully one which can increase the enjoyment, satisfaction and level of surfing within these countries and ASP Australasia is proud to be associated with these charitable offerings from Coastalwatch.com” said Dane Jordan.

Julian Wilson wins SriLankan Airlines Pro

Australia’s Julian Wilson wins SriLankan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay
Sri Lanka’s first ever ASP event hailed an outstanding success!

Arugam Bay Sri Lanka:Australia’s Julian Wilson has won the 6 star rated Association of Surfing Professionals SriLankan Airlines Pro in flawless 4 to 6 feet surf on an epic final day.

Wilson came into this event courtesy of a wild-card from the sponsor and throughout the event he dominated, continually posting the day’s highest scoring rides and took a deserved win over 19 year-old USA surfer Nat Young.

Wilson and Young were unquestionably the worthy finalists here as both verified their status as two of the most exciting emerging ASP surfers.

Wilson controlled the final from start to finish and capitalised early by taking wave priority when Young took off on a poor opening wave.

By mid-final Wilson had a solid lead and Young faulted slightly going for some gigantic floating re entry moves that never quite came off while Wilson continued to build on his lead scoring a 7.4 ride late in the final which left Young chasing an outstanding 9 point ride to bridge the gap.

While everyone knew Young was capable of such a score with only five minutes remaining finding the wave that could deliver the score became Young’s task which he could not complete.

“I can’t believe what an outstanding event this has been for me and all the surfers who have travelled here” said 22 year-old Wilson after his win.

“The waves have been outstanding everyday and in many ways they are similar to the point waves around Noosa where I live – but probably way more consistent.”

“I’m back and over my injuries and seriously looking hard at the qualifying series – this result is ideal for me and I’ll head to California for the US Open full of confidence.”

It was both Wilson and Young’s best ever performance at ASP level and both look ready to seriously challenge the highest ranks of surfing.

“I’ve had an amazing week here and I’m really greatful to have made the final” said Young.

“I knew the only way to beat Julian would be to score two excellent waves in that final – he’s been the stand-out all week – I went for the win but came unstuck on a few critical moves but I’m really pleased with this result.”

Both semi finals were incredibly close affairs today with Wilson defeating Drew Courtney by catching an 8.5 ride in the last minutes while Nat Young posted an outstanding 9.33 near the end of his semi final to edge out Australia’s Jayke Sharpe.

Arugam Bay saved it’s best to the last day here and delivered amazing conditions with clean long lined waves reeling across this ideal point break set-up and delivered both chargeable sections and barrels and the surfers simply revelled in the perfection.

The event was outstanding overall and all in attendance agreed another magnificent venue had been added to the ASP surfing tour and all look forward to next year.

MR Makes His Mark Hottest Junior Surfers at his High Performance Surf Camp

Mark “MR” Richards Makes His Mark On Australia’s Hottest Junior Surfers at his High Performance Surf Camp

FORMER world champion surfer Mark Richards is renowned for pushing the limits of performance surfing throughout the 1970’s and early 80’s. But today, he was wasn’t letting his own surfing take the limelight, rather mentoring Australia’s finest under 16 junior surfers participating in his MR Surf Camp.
MR, who won four consecutive World Titles from 1979 – 1982, spent the morning with the countries up-and-coming junior surf stars as they participated in mock heats on a day trip to South Stradbroke Island before returning to the mainland for some high performance sport training.
“It’s awesome to come up from Newcastle and be involved with the camp,” said Richards. “The coaches do an amazing job with the kids. They go through such a different range of concepts, and not just surfing based. It’s great to be able to give something back to our emerging surf stars.”
Richards gave plenty of hints and tips to the large group of star-eyed grommets as they tore up the small 2ft break waves on offer.
“It’s the first time I’ve been to South Straddie – It’s an incredible setup,” said Richards. The surf wasn’t exceptional, but the kids were pretty excited and enjoyed some fun, small ones.”
The MR camp is designed as an elite training camp for Australian junior surfers and is dedicated to giving young surfers the best coaching from Australia’s finest coaches and fitness experts by using a scientific approach to elite surf coaching. Surfers & coaches live at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) at Casuarina and partake in a range of activities to enhance their surfing future.
“Australia is such a strong surfing nation,” said Richards. “Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore have been winning World Titles for the last couple of years and we’re now in an winning era. An elite training program like this which picks some of the best young surfers from every state in Australia and gives them a week of intensive practical training is hugely beneficial and I think if the talent is there and we’re nurturing it, it’s a great pathway to continuing Australian success at the elite level.”
The twenty-one surfers selected from each state included Jackson Coffey, Bodi Smith, Jackson Baker, Jack Germain, Tylah Hutchinson and Sam Bond from NSW, Will Morrison, Kai Hing, Ethan Moller and Hayden Cervi from Qld, Cody Robinson, Joe Van Dijk, Francis Meade and Nicholas Alcock from Victoria, Sam Pike and Kyle Imgraben from South Australia, Zac Haynes-Love, James Fleming, Jake Edwards and Joshua Burke from WA and Gerome Bramich from TAS.
The surfers are being put through their paces by some of the country’s finest coaches and instructors including Jake Hardcroft, Patrick Moran, Surfing Victoria’s Head Coach Ross Slaven, Jamo Borthwick, Phil McNamara, who coaches two time ASP Men’s World Champion Mick Fanning and Surfing Australia’s own Head Coach Gary Cruickshank.
The five day camp, which got underway on Monday and round up today, was organized by Surfing Australia’s HPC and focused on contest strategy, skills, technique and included video coaching, fitness evaluation, judging and equipment seminars, breath enhancement training, nutrition and mental preparation techniques.
The camp has been running since 1982 and has seen the likes of reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning and 2009 ASP World Title runner-up Joel Parkinson come through its ranks – making it one of the most beneficial courses for a would be professional surfer.
The Layne Beachley Girls Camp will be held next week from June 14th – 18th.
The Mark Richards Surf Camp is a joint initiative between the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, State branches and Australian Sports Commission.

Crews Cruises Into Day Two With Ease

(Friday 4th June 2010) Western Australia’s only ASP sanctioned pro junior event, the Chill Pro Junior presented by the City of Stirling, commenced today at Trigg Point, with small but highly contestable waves on offer for round one of the men’s competition.

The event has brought some of Australia’s best under 21 year-old surfers to the WA coast, battling for $25,000 prize money. Competitors were greeted with clean two-to- three feet (1 metre) quality right and left hand waves which gave them ample opportunity to impress with some polished displays of surfing.

This morning’s action was highlighted by the performances of Mitch Crews (Currumbin, QLD), Sam Wrench (Ulladulla, NSW), Blake Ainsworth (Coolangatta, QLD), Chris Sailsbury (Newport, NSW) and Davey Cathels (Narrabeen, NSW) who all posted impressive round one wins and confirmed their status as the surfers to beat.

Number one seed Mitch Crews got straight down to business in the opening heat of the day, beginning his campaign with the powerful and stylish surfing that has him currently holding down first place on the ASP Pro Junior ratings, after a consistent start to 2010.

Crews’ patience, superior wave selection and devastating forehand manoeuvres saw him rewarded with two of the morning’s highest scoring waves, a near perfect 8.00 out of a possible ten, and a back up 6.50 to finish with a combined total of 14.50 out of twenty.

“The waves here are really fun when they come through, the morning high tide didn’t make the going very easy, but I was lucky enough to swing into a few wider rights that I could really go to town on,” Crews said after his heat.

“We were lucky enough to get some really good waves down in Margaret River the past few days before the event started today. A pretty major change from surfing 4-6 foot barrelling waves, then coming to small beach breaks,” he said.

After his heat Crews joined 2009 Chill Pro Junior defending champion Felicity Palmateer (Hillarys, WA) in visiting two local primary schools to explain the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

“Surfing has benefited me some much over the years that it’s good to give a little bit back.” Crews said.

Matching the efforts of the number one seed today was his closest rival Davey Cathels, who used his recent victory in New Zealand as motivation coming into this event.

Cathels posted the day one’s highest score, a 9.00 ride in a devastating opening heat, with his intensity and drive seeing him edge out younger competitors Connor O’Leary (Cronulla, NSW), and current under 18 National Champion Tim MacDonald (Point Lookout, QLD) to stake his intentions clearly to all other competitors.

“I’m pretty hungry to go back to back with a win here in WA.” said Cathels.

WA locals didn’t fair quite as well with only three moving through to the next round. Local Trigg surfer Darcy Maynard proved local knowledge is key, with a hard fought win. Maynard will be joined by Margaret River duo Jethro Headstrom and Matt Baldock when competition continues tomorrow.

With a positive forecast for the remainder of the event, officials are hopeful the surf will build over the weekend. The women’s event will begin first thing tomorrow, with heats commencing at 7.30am.

The Chill Pro Junior is presented by the City of Stirling and is proudly supported by Surfing Western Australia, 92.9, Community Newspapers, West, The Wire Magazine, Waves Surfwear, Sorrento Beach Quality Resort, Power Balance, Nature Play WA, Department of Sport and Recreation, , Illicit Drugs in Sport Education Program and ASP Australasia.
